                Faculty of Engineering

                University of Mauritius

Date:       Tuesday, 23 April 2019

Time:      09:00 hrs

Aim of the Interactive Workshop

In December 2018, the Council of the University of Mauritius adopted a new vision for the institution as follows: ‘To position the UoM as a  Research-Engaged and Entrepreneurial University’. The new vision while being very relevant to the evolution in tertiary education worldwide, calls upon us, universities and stakeholders to work in closer collaboration for meeting the changing needs and expectations of industry and society. It is in this context that this interactive workshop is being organized with the following objectives:

  • Agree on the research agenda for the Faculty of Engineering;
  • Discuss avenues of collaboration on research projects;
  • Discuss the competency requirements of the engineering sector for the medium to long term.

Currently, the Faculty has forty-two (42) registered research students (MPhil/PhD and Research Assistants) conducting research in fields such as Renewable Energy, Sustainable Development, Smart Energy Systems, Waste Management, Environmental Engineering, Network & Information Security, Communication Systems and Small and Medium Enterprise Development and Empowerment among others.  Funding for supporting research mainly comes from the University of Mauritius and different local and international organisations such as the MRC, TEC, WARFSA, Royal Society, AUF, and IAEA among others. Though the Faculty is very active in research, there is a perception of missing Research Engagement with Industry. The workshop attempts to address same.

The programme involves an introductory session which will be followed by five (5) focus group discussions in the following fields:

  • Applied Sustainability and Enterprise Development
  • Civil Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Mechanical and Production Engineering

The workshop will end with a plenary session where each focus group will present their findings in relation to the objectives.
