On the 11th February 2026, the Directors of the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius (CI-UOM) were recently honored with a courtesy call at the State House, invited by His Excellency Dharambeer Gokhool, President of the Republic of Mauritius. The meeting served as a fruitful platform to discuss the Institute's diverse operational activities and its role in the local educational and cultural landscape of Mauritius.
During the exchange, the President expressed his deep appreciation for the wide range of cultural and academic initiatives spearheaded by the Institute. As a scholar of history with a profound understanding of global cultures, His Excellency shared his personal affinity for the Chinese community. He recalled receiving invitations from various organizations within the Chinese diaspora and makes it a priority to attend as many as possible to show his support.
In a particularly inspiring moment, the President recounted his first introduction to the Chinese language during his undergraduate studies in Delhi, India. Driven by a lifelong passion for learning, he expressed a keen interest in re-engaging with the language. Furthermore, His Excellency shared his vision for organizing upcoming public activities aimed at children and the general community. He extended an invitation to the Confucius Institute to collaborate on these events, leveraging our expertise to share the richness of Chinese culture with a broader audience. The CI-UOM looks forward to supporting the President’s vision of a culturally enriched and inclusive Mauritius.
