A Legacy of Excellence in Electrical and Electronic Engineering:
Established in 1968, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEED) at the University of Mauritius boasts a rich history of nurturing future engineers. We have continuously adapted our curriculum and programs to meet the evolving needs of the industry and equip our graduates for success in the ever-changing technological landscape.

A Journey of Evolution:

  • 1968: The EEED began as the Electrical Engineering Division within the School of Industrial Technology.
  • Early 1970s: To address the growing demand for engineers, the department offered a joint Diploma in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
  • 1976: The B.Tech/Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering course was launched.
  • 1997: The program transitioned to a BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic/Communication Engineering, allowing students to choose their specialization in their fourth year.
  • 1997: In collaboration with the Mechanical and Production Engineering department, the BEng (Hons) Mechatronics Engineering program was introduced.
  • 2009: Responding to student interest, the BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering and BEng (Hons) Electronic and Communication Engineering were offered as separate programs.
  • 2016: The BEng (Hons) Telecommunication Engineering with Networking program was added to our portfolio.
  • 2016: In a landmark effort, the department undertook a comprehensive program revamp to align the BEng (Hons) programs with the international standards of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the Washington Accord, enhancing graduate mobility and career prospects.
  • 2019: The department expanded its postgraduate offerings with the introduction of three Master of Science (M.Sc.) programs.
  • 2021: Regular Accreditation of B. Eng. (Hons.) Electrical and Electronic Engineering with ECSA
  • 2024: Regular Accreditation of the B. Eng. (Hons.) Telecommunications Engineering with Networking, by the Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB) of Mauritius
  • 2024: Launch of two fully online Master of Science (M.Sc.) programs:
    1. M.Sc. Renewable Energy and Smart Electrical Systems: Delve into the future of energy by exploring cutting-edge technologies in renewable energy generation, integration, and control alongside smart grids and microgrids.
    2. M.Sc. Telecommunications with Internet of Things (IoT): Master the convergence of telecommunications and IoT, equipping yourself with the expertise to design, implement, and manage next-generation connected systems.

Shaping the Future:

Today, the EEED continues to thrive by:

  • Offering diverse undergraduate programs in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering with Networking, and Mechatronics Engineering (jointly with the Mechanical and Production Engineering department).
  • Providing opportunities for further academic development through Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees under faculty supervision.
  • Maintaining a vibrant learning environment with state-of-the-art and well-equipped laboratories.
  • Employing a dedicated faculty of 16 highly motivated and passionate academic staff committed to providing cutting-edge education and fostering research in diverse fields.
  • Actively collaborating with local and international partners to stay at the forefront of technological advancements.

The EEED is committed to empowering the next generation of engineers to become responsible and impactful contributors to society.
