Confucius Institute at University of Mauritius (CI-UoM) re-launched the ‘Student Exchange Programme’ in China after 3 years of break due to the global pandemic of COVID-19. Eleven students were selected to visit our partner University in China, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University (ZSTU) located in Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province. The student exchange programme is organised by CI-UoM in collaboration with ZSTU.
The opening ceremony of the ‘Student Exchange Programme’ was held in the presence of the two Pro Vice-Chancellors of the University of Mauritius, Professor Issack Santally and Associate Professor Dinesh Surroop, the two Directors of Confucius Institute at University of Mauritius, Professor Fu Mingduan and Associate Professor Naraindra Kistamah at UoM. The Pro Vice-Chancellors welcomed all participants, congratulated them for their exam success, and for having secured the opportunity to experience cultural and educational exchanges in China.
The student exchange programme started at ZSTU, Hangzhou on Monday 23rd October 2023 with a warm and welcoming speech by Professor Cui Can, Deputy Director of the Exchange and Cooperation Department of the International Office. The ZSTU teachers guided the UoM students in their practice of Chinese in real communicative situations, thus enhancing both their written and oral communication skills, through vivid and interactive teaching methods. The university also arranged a series of colorful Chinese culture experience courses which include silk tie & dye, martial arts and paper-cutting. These cultural activities provided the students with an unforgettable and unique experience of appreciating, first-hand, the charm of traditional Chinese culture.

The students also visited a number of scenic spots and landmarks in Hangzhou and Shanghai, not only to appreciate the rich history and culture of China, but also to experience the distinctive charm of these two very large cities. The China Silk Museum showcased the profound heritage of Chinese silk culture. The famous West Lake of Hangzhou is a wonderfully preserved imperial pleasure garden with profound cultural heritage and natural beauty. It is described by Marco Polo as the ‘City of Heaven’. The students also experienced authentic Hangzhou cuisine in restaurants and tasted street food in Hefang whilst enjoying the unique charm of the ancient streets and alleys.
The long history of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal also allowed them to appreciate the glory of the ancient civilization. The students visited the archaeological Liangzhu museum in Hangzhou, one which is dedicated to the Neolithic Liangzhu culture and it houses a collection of well-preserved artefacts. In the lively city of Shanghai, the students could admire the modern cityscape of Shanghai. They also visited the City God Temple which is an ancient temple reminiscent of the time of old Shanghai.

“The two-week exchange programme at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University (ZSTU) in China was a journey of cultural immersion, academic enrichment, and personal growth. The programme was meticulously prepared to provide a comprehensive understanding of Chinese culture, history, and modern advancements. Overall, it was an enriching and rewarding experience for me. It helped me to improve my Chinese language skills, and learn about Chinese culture and history. It also inspired me to continue my journey of learning Chinese, and to pursue further opportunities to study or work in China.”

“The 2023 Winter Camp was a transformative journey for us. It expanded our horizons, deepened our understanding of Chinese culture, and left us with cherished memories that will last a lifetime. As we left China with heavy hearts, we knew we were taking a piece of this incredible experience with us, forever enriching our lives.”
Mahalaksmi Devi Dasi Doodee, PhD Candidate, Marine Ecophysiology
“The trip was totally different from what I expected. The beauty of China does not only lie in its food, culture or high-tech cities but also in its people. The people really made me feel at home. They gladly welcomed and talked to us, and we had the opportunity to make a lot of friends on and off campus. I remember an incident when a complete stranger, very kindly and without asking, paid for me at a shop when I struggled with ‘Alipay’, and another helped us with the ‘shared’ bikes. Everyone I met was kind and genuine from my experience.”
Ian Nicolas Moutou, BEng(Hons) Mechanical Engineering
“We were immersed in a transformative experience that allowed us to delve deeply into the heart of Chinese culture, language, and tradition, leaving an indelible mark on our collective consciousness. The campus itself exuded a vibrant and energetic ambiance, with its modern architectural design and state-of-the-art facilities that catered for the diverse needs of the students. The tranquil and serene environment of the campus, nestled amidst the picturesque natural landscapes, served as a conducive backdrop for fostering intellectual growth and personal development. It was an extraordinary journey that transcended cultural boundaries and instilled a deep sense of understanding and appreciation of the rich heritage and traditions of China.”
Sundev Parboteeah, PhD Candidate, Marine Biotechnology
“The educational and cultural exchange programme allowed us to meet inspiring people, learn fascinating history, experience mouth-watering cuisines and appreciate mesmerizing landscapes. The outings we had in Hangzhou and Shanghai gave us a unique opportunity to discover China and its rich culture, language and people, this time not through books but in real life.”
Luvlesh Rahul Vickchit Rughoonauth, BSc Economics & Finance
“The programme helped me to improve my understanding of China and gave me the opportunity to learn the history and culture of ancient China, and the advancement and achievement of modern China. I have learned from China that continued hard work and focus on details make life better, to enjoy every moments of success and to be kind by giving back the love that you receive from each and everyone. I am very grateful to everyone for this opportunity given to me.”
Rudranee Devi Deeljore, PhD Candidate, Finance & Banking
“My trip to China can be summarised into one single word ‘marvellous’. It was indeed the best two weeks of my life, so far. The Exchange Program helped me to realise one of my dreams which is to interact with native Chinese people in their local language.
What I loved the most about China is how hospitable and friendly the locals are. I made so many Chinese friends and we still talk to each other on WeChat.
