CI-UoM successfully launched the classes for Chinese calligraphy and painting on October 18th and 21st. The classes have garnered the participation of over 70 individuals, with the majority coming from universities, middle and primary schools in Mauritius, as well as various segments of society. The courses primarily emphasize the teaching of fundamental techniques in Chinese calligraphy and painting, encompassing subjects such as plum, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, landscape painting, as well as regular and cursive script. The objective is to promote Chinese ink art culture, its technical and theoretical aspects.
Teaching Scenes from Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Classes
CI-UoM offers Chinese calligraphy and painting classes twice a year, and has maintained this program for five consecutive years. Under the expert guidance of professional painting instructors at the Confucius Institute, students have made significant progress in Chinese calligraphy and painting techniques and theory. Some students in the advanced classes have exhibited their works in multiple art shows and received prestigious awards. Notably, Marjorie Nadal, the student from Intermediate Painting Course at CI-UoM won the Best Skill Award at 2022 Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreigners across the Globe.
To broaden the popularity of Chinese calligraphy and painting within the local community, CI-UoM has organized two teacher-student art exhibitions over the past three years. One of these was held under the theme: ‘China-Mauritius: Friendship & Harmony - 50 Years of China-Mauritius Diplomatic Relations’. The Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition was organized in collaboration with Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation in November 2022, and garnered extensive coverage in the mainstream local media, including television, radio, and newspapers.
