On the eve of the National Day of China on September 30th, 2021, an online talk was held to introduce scholarships in China and began at 7pm (local time in Mauritius) via ZOOM video conference. The Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius organized the talk, with the following speakers: Professor Fu Mingduan, Chinese Director; Dr. Dharma Kistamah, Local Director; Miss Sharon Too, Local Mandarin teacher, Miss Li Xiaoxia, Chinese Mandarin teacher of the Confucius Institute; and Miss Joëlle Joseph, a recipient of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University’s President Scholarship and University of Mauritius undergraduate. Despite the various restrictions on entry and exit to and from China, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the online scholarship talk still attracted many students from the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius as well as other Mauritians who are interested in studying in China. More than 60 people participated in the lectures successively, and the atmosphere was lively and full of interaction.
The online scholarship talk began with an introduction on the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius by the Chinese Director, Professor Fu Mingduan, starting with an overview of the establishment and development of the institute, as well as its purpose, faculty team, courses taught and various cultural and academic activities carried out on the university campus and in Mauritius. Director Fu Mingduan also briefly introduced the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship and the Zhejiang Sci-Tech University President Scholarship.
Afterwards, Miss Sharon Too, the local Mandarin teacher, first introduced nine reasons for studying in China from her own personal experience. She mentioned several compelling reasons to study in China including: the development of international education in China; high cost-effective learning through affordable tuition fees and cost of living; a unique cultural experience on campus and in China; China as a safe, comfortable and convenient study destination. Miss Sharon then introduced in detail the two scholarships, including the basic information, relevant application requirements, degrees and programs offered, and a comparison of the two scholarships. The presentation was concise and to the point.
Next, Miss Li Xiaoxia, a Mandarin teacher at the Confucius Institute, gave a step-by-step explanation of the application procedure. She explained how to seek assistance and deal with some issues that may arise in the application process through the website.
Shortly after, Miss Joëlle Joseph, UoM Scholar at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University (ZSTU), China, shared her personal experience and impressions about studying at ZSTU, for the audience to have a rich and in-depth understanding of the life of an international student at ZSTU.
At the end of the online talk, the local director, Dr. Dharma Kistamah, gave a concluding speech; he warmly welcomes all students to actively apply for the scholarships and looks forward to the bright future of students who will study in China. The Confucius Institute will provide all the necessary assistance in the application procedure. During the online talk, participants actively asked questions and interacted enthusiastically; the teachers also responded with detailed answers to each question. This brought the Chinese scholarship talk to a successful close.
