Confucius Institute at University of Mauritius had the honour and pleasure to welcome distinguished Professor Cai Tianxin from the Department of Mathematics, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. His visit to the University of Mauritius was made possible by the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science of the University of Mauritius and the Srinivasa Ramanujan Trust, Mauritius. Dr Sattianathan Sungeelee, GOSK, Founder & Trustee, Srinivasa Ramanujan Trust, Consultant Cardiologist, welcomed the distinguished guests. Professor Cai gave a memorial lecture entitled ‘Mathematical Discovery and Mathematical Contest’ for the Award ceremony of the 7th Ramanujan Mathematics contest on 8th June 2023. He also gave a talk to university students of mathematics as well as participated in a Round Table at the Mauritius Broadcasting Cooperation.
During his guest talk, Professor Cai combined mathematics with art and travel which the audience found fascinating. ‘Professor Cai has published more than 30 books of poetry, essays, travels, photograph, autobiography, popular mathematics and number theory. His work has been translated into more than 20 languages.’ His latest book is entitled ‘A brief History of Mathematics’.
