In May 2020, Confucius Institute at University of Mauritius held the first hard-pen calligraphy competition based on the theme of friendship. The content of the poem “Farewell to Vice-Prefect Du” (Song Du Shao Fu Zhi Ren Shu Zhou) was selected for the competition. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was held online.
Once the notice of the competition was issued, the teachers explained the meaning of the poem to the students during online courses and interactions. During the preparation period, the teachers offered students a lot of guidance and help. 45 students, from different classes (children, UoM students and public) signed up and showed great enthusiasm for the competition.
The three criteria for the hard-pen calligraphy competition were the correctness of Chinese character writing, the setting of the structure and framework, and the overall layout. The judges selected 16 winning works, including 1 winner for the First Prize, 2 winners for the Second Prize, 3 winners for the Third Prize, and 10 winners for the Fourth Prize.
