Confucius Institute at University of Mauritius (CI-UoM) launched the 2024 “Chinese Bridge” Students’ Exchange Programme on 11th June. 15 students were selected to visit the partner University in China, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University (ZSTU) located in Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province.
The opening ceremony was held at ZSTU on Thursday 13th, and Mr. Fu Xiang, the Director of the International Exchange & Cooperation Office warmly welcomed all students. UoM Student, Dhanrani Boolaky, also gave a speech for the group. After that, the delegation started with the campus tour of ZSTU. The students could appreciate the state-of-the-art facilities, the well-equipped and user friendly library and other staff and students’ infrastructures. The students and teachers were also greeted with a welcome lunch at the University Canteen. They were served with an array of delicious and exquisite dishes. In the afternoon, the students had their first Chinese class with teacher Zhao.
During weekdays, besides Chinese classes, students participated in several activities. They had the opportunity to have a class dedicated to ‘Communication with International Students.’ Just like them, the international students are enthusiasts of Chinese Language and Culture. They were able to share their common interest with each other. It was a very fulfilling and rich encounter. Students also had the opportunity to learn about Modern China through an enriching lecture. They were taught how to use Alipay and Weixin pay for e-commerce during their stay in China. Furthermore, students experienced Chinese culture through various fascinating courses which included Chinese Songs, Paper Cutting and Tea Ceremony. These classes enabled the students to broaden their knowledge of Chinese Culture.
Mandarin Class at ZSTU
During weekends, students visited West Lake which is steeped in history and legend. Wandering around the West Lake allowed the students to witness the peaceful nature, panoramic views, and gigantic body of water that have been pulsing with life for ages. They also discovered the impressive heritage of the Silk Culture and Production at the China National Silk Museum. They discovered the fine craft of designed silk robes and shoes which belonged to great personalities like emperors and warriors. They strolled around the beautiful and cultural Hefang Street and enjoyed traditional Chinese crafts, ancient architecture and local snacks. Furthermore, they visited The Grand Canal and learned about its importance as a transport infrastructure during Medieval and pre-modern China. Students spent one day in Shanghai and experienced the harmonious contrast between ancient and modern architecture.
Visit at China National Silk Museum
On 22nd June, the students took part in the international HSK exams. These few days have been a great learning opportunity, and students were able to practice their Chinese speaking with local people, enabling them to better prepare for their exams. The exchange program ended on 23rd June. During these few days, the students got so attached to the lifestyle, culture, people and streets of Hangzhou that it was difficult to say goodbye to such a splendid journey. This trip has been a dream come true for many!

As someone who is captivated by Chinese culture and cuisine, this experience allowed me to immerse myself in the diversity, complexities, and hospitality of the Chinese people.
