Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Arts at Lycée des Mascareignes, Mauritius, December 2024

On December 6 and 10, 2024, two Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Art Activities were successfully conducted at the Lycée des Mascareignes in Mauritius. These activities were led by Professor Zhang Kangfu and Associate Professor Xue Yajun, from the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius.

On December 6, the activity focused on the theme of Chinese Painting Experience. The session began with Professor Zhang Kangfu showcasing his fan painting works, followed by a live demonstration of traditional Chinese painting techniques, using Qi Baishi's shrimp painting style as an example. Another painting theme was orchid, which included drawing orchid leaves, flowers, and butterflies. For many Mauritian students, this posed a considerable challenge. Professor Zhang patiently coached them, encouraging bold attempts. Over two hours, the students displayed keen interest in Chinese painting tools and techniques. Their earnest efforts and enthusiasm created a vibrant and relaxed classroom atmosphere.

On December 10, the activity included lacquer fan crafting and calligraphy learning. Under Professor Zhang’s guidance, each student created a lacquer fan, showcasing diverse styles filled with creativity and personal flair. In the calligraphy session, Associate Professor Xue Yajun introduced the five fundamental Chinese script styles: Seal Script, Clerical Script, Regular Script, Semi-Cursive Script, and Cursive Script. He then guided students in writing the characters Chun (Spring) and Fu (Blessing) to prepare them for an upcoming Chinese New Year calligraphy exhibition. As the activity concluded, at the students’ request, Professor Zhang Kangfu and Assoicate Professor Xue Yajun inscribed Chinese characters on the handmade lacquer fans, adding a touch of fun and commemorative value to the experience.
