Upon invitation by the Bank of China, Mauritius, the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius started a five months’ Mandarin training course for its employees on September 20th, 2021. This is the first time that the Confucius Institute launched a vocational Mandarin training course for local employees of Chinese-funded enterprises. The curriculum of this course is based on the in-depth understanding of the professional needs of the local employees of the Bank of China in Mauritius, combined with the participants’ current Mandarin proficiency. The teaching goals are geared towards cultivating the participants’ daily oral communication skills, and focus on training local employees in using vocabulary, sentence patterns and dialogues that often arise when conducting business in the banking sector.

Mrs Liu Linyan, the Mandarin teacher at CI-UoM, believes that professional Mandarin training must be based on the students' Mandarin learning needs and their actual level. Taking digital teaching as an example, in addition to teaching students how to read basic numbers, the bank employees are also required to master the sign language for numbers and the numbers one to ten written in capital characters in the banking sector. On this basis, the usage of numbers is reviewed and daily use vocabulary is mastered through the topic of "money deposit and withdrawal". The exercises during the online vocational Mandarin training courses should not only maximize the advantages of online classes, but also minimize its shortcomings through the effective use of instantaneous and convenience aspect of chat room. In terms of teaching method, a combination of pictures, voice and video is used, and the content is practiced through a combination of individual exercises, group dialogues and role-play.

In addition, CI-UoM in collaboration with the Department of English Studies at the University of Mauritius, offers a specialized course in Business (Banking) English for Chinese banking officers of the bank. Dr Tejshree Auckle and Associate Professor (Dr) Auleear Owodally are the resource persons for the training programme.

We sincerely hope that through these vocational language-training programmes, the local employees of Bank of China in Mauritius can effectively communicate using basic Mandarin and English banking terms. We look forward to more corporate employees honing their business language skills and work standards through "Vocation + Mandarin" training programme.
