On the evening of December 21, 2024, the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius, in collaboration with the Tai Chi Chuan Federation of Mauritius, successfully held a Chinese cultural event at Mahogany Mall. The event was attended by Mr. Eshan Juman, Deputy Chairperson of Committees , Mauritius, Mrs. Davina Abel, Communications and Marketing Coordinator of Mahogany Mall, Mohammed Yasin Owadally, Director of Tai Chi Chuan Federation, Dr. Naraindra Kistamah, Mauritian Director of the Confucius Institute, and Professor Fu Mingduan, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute. The event, held just before Christmas, attracted more than 200 local participants.
The opening ceremony began at 7:30 PM, where speeches were delivered by Mrs. Davina Abel, Mohammed Yasin Owadally Shifu, Professor Fu Mingduan, and Mr. Eshan Juman. They all agreed that Mauritius is a model of multicultural harmony, where diverse ethnic groups coexist peacefully in a vibrant multicultural environment, building bridges of mutual understanding and communication. Tai Chi embodies key values of Chinese culture, such as balance and harmony, while Chinese calligraphy’s graceful brushstrokes, intricate paper-cutting patterns, refined tea ceremonies, and expressive beauty in painting all showcase the unique charm and profound depth of Chinese culture.
After the opening ceremony, members of the Tai Chi Chuan Federation performed Qigong Eight Pieces of Brocade, Tai Chi 36 Forms, 42 Forms, and Soon Style Tai Chi, demonstrating the essence of Chinese traditional martial arts. The performance drew enthusiastic attention from the audience, with many praising the excellent skills on display.
Following the performances, the cultural experience session allowed local participants to engage in various traditional Chinese cultural activities led by the Confucius Institute’s teachers. Participants eagerly tried their hand at Chinese calligraphy, appreciating the graceful movement of the brush on paper. They also took part in painting and paper-cutting activities, enjoying the delicate creativity of Chinese art. Additionally, the tea ceremony experience allowed everyone to appreciate the elegance and depth of Chinese tea culture. Each participant felt the profound heritage and unique charm of Chinese culture through these activities. The event was highly popular, with many participants lingering at the various booths, exploring the traditional cultural projects. The event successfully concluded at 10 pm.
As Christmas and New Year approached, this cultural event added a festive atmosphere to Mauritius, further deepening the local community’s understanding and appreciation of Chinese traditional culture.
