The opening ceremony of the " Harmony and Prosperity: Spring Festival through Artistic Eyes" Chinese Painting exhibition organized by the Confucius Institute of the University of Mauritius was successfully held at 2:00 p.m. local time on February 7, 2024, at Tribeca Mall. Ambassador Zhu Liying from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and Professor Sanjeev Sobhee, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mauritius, attended the function. Also present were Cultural Counsellor Yang Jun from Embassy of the Republic of China, Dr. Kistamah, the Mauritian director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius, Professor Fu Mingduan, the Chinese director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius, over 60 students from the calligraphy and painting classes of the Confucius Institute, as well as calligraphy and painting enthusiasts from Mauritius.
Ambassador Zhu Liying stated in his speech that Chinese culture is an important part of Mauritius' multiculturalism, and cultural exchange serves as a crucial link in Sino-Mauritian friendship. He believed that the " Harmony and Prosperity: Spring Festival through Artistic Eyes" Chinese painting exhibition hosted by the Confucius Institute at University of Mauritius, celebrating the Chinese New Year through art, would infuse the Spring Festival with more vitality and joy. He expressed hopes for more creative cultural activities in the future to deepen mutual understanding between the people of China and Mauritius and promote the dissemination of Chinese traditional culture in Mauritius.
Professor Sanjeev Sobhee, VC of the University of Mauritius, pointed out that the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius has been offering Chinese painting courses for five consecutive years. Under the guidance of professional art teachers, the students have made significant progress in the theory and techniques of Chinese painting. The University of Mauritius will continue to support the work of the Confucius Institute, enriching academic and cultural exchanges between China and Mauritius. Professor Sanjiv Sobhee believed that this exhibition would further deepen the solidarity, friendship, and cooperation between China and Mauritius.
The exhibition featured 47 landscape and scenery paintings by the students from the painting class of the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius, 20 fan paintings by Professor Zhang Kangfu, and 35 children's paintings by students from the children class. To celebrate the Year of the Dragon, the painting works will be exhibited at the Tribeca Mall in Mauritius from February 7th to 9th February for three days. The students from the Confucius Institute's painting class displayed delicate strokes, rich emotions, and unique perspectives. They use Chinese painting techniques to depict the local scenery of Mauritius, providing a visual feast for the Spring Festival. Professor Zhang Kangfu's fan paintings are exquisite in brushwork and graceful in style, with exquisite flowers and birds on silk fans. The children's paintings are imaginative, creative, and full of innocence, presenting the joy and happiness of the Spring Festival through the eyes of children.
