Virtual Spring Festival Show 2022 by Confucius Institute at University of Mauritius

CI-UoM put together a series of recorded and live performances that were presented online for the celebration of Spring Festival 2022. The virtual gala show began at 9:30 am, 30th January and received a good response with nearly two hundred people in attendance.

The Spring Festival Show 2022 opened up with the speech of His Excellency Mr. Zhu Liying, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Mauritius. Ambassador Zhu summarized the fruitful achievements of CI-UoM and praised it for building a bridge of friendship between China and Mauritius. The year of 2022 will witness the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Mauritius, and 2022 is the Year of the Tiger in China. Tiger symbolizes strength, vitality and courage. Ambassador Zhu extended his sincere New Year greetings to all the teachers and students of Confucius Institute at University of Mauritius.

Associate Professor Naraindra Kistamah, Local Director and Professor Fu Mingduan, Chinese Director of CI-UoM briefly reviewed the various teaching and cultural activities carried out by Confucius Institute in 2021 under the challenge of the pandemic, and looked forward to a new journey with the spirit of the tiger in the Chinese New Year. They thanked all those who constantly helped and supported CI and sent their best wishes for the Chinese Year of Tiger.

The first performance was ‘The Tiger Year is Here’, which is full of the festive atmosphere of Chinese New Year, receiving good fortune and sending blessings. Then the song ‘Jasmine Flower’, played by Chinese national instrument ‘erhu’, and the classic song of ‘Sweet Honey’ gave the viewers an enjoyable taste of Chinese music. Next was the perfect fusion of Chinese and Indian dance, which fully reflects the harmonious existence of multiculturalism in Mauritius. The melodious piano solo performance of ‘A Twig of Mume Blossoms’ carried the audience through beautiful imaginary scenes of spring breeze. Then the recitation of five ancient Chinese poems showed the rhythm of traditional Chinese poems. The students of Calligraphy and Painting Class displayed the traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy performances of ‘Blessings from Chinese Painting and Calligraphy’, which refreshed the audience’s knowledge of the traditions of the Chinese New Year and the unique charm of Chinese culture. At the end of show, all the CI staff sang ‘The Same Song’ to express their best wishes for the New Year.

Over the past five years, CI-UoM has been dedicated to strengthening educational ties, supporting Chinese language education and increasing mutual understanding between China and Mauritius. For the New Year of the Tiger, CI-UoM will seize every opportunity and start new journeys, stride forward to consolidate itself into a high-level institute of teaching, cultural and academic collaboration between China and Mauritius.

Let’s make 2022 a year to be daring, to be grateful, to be filled with joy! CI UoM wish you all a very Happy Chinese New Year as we enter the year of the Tiger, a year traditionally associated with vigorousness, strength and good fortune.
