A Medical Update talk titled “Recent advances in therapeutics” was held on 17th of July 2024 at the University of Mauritius.

The talk was delivered by Mr Sadeck VAWDA, MRPharmS (UK), Pharmacist and General Manager at Unicorn (MSJ Limited).

Mr Vawda talked on Precision Medicine and its use in Oncology, Neurology and Psychiatry. Precision medicine has led to targeted therapies with more effective and safer medicines . In oncology, prescision medicine has moved from concept to reality, for example with osimertinib used in non-small cell lung cancer, Car T cell therapy and immunotherapy. He further talked about Tirzepatide- the first GLP 1/ GIP agonist,  in the management of diabetes. He also discussed about new drugs in the management of obesity including semaglutide and tirzepatide. 

Finally, Mr Vawda presented a few newcomers in the treatment of various disorders such as migraine(CGRP blockers), glaucoma( Rhokinase inhibitors), HIV(Lenacapavir), postpartum depression(Zuranolone), hyperlipidaemia/ LDL cholesterol reduction(inclisiran), and NASH(resmetirom).
