Overview

Set up together with the establishment of the School of Industrial Technology in 1968, the Mechanical and Production Engineering (MPE) Department has played a vital role in producing diploma holders and undergraduates to support the industrial revolution of Mauritius. Starting with the Diploma in Mechanical and Electrical (DME) Engineering in the early 1970s, the Department now offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to meet the requirements of the industrial sector with heavy emphasis on continual upgrade of the programme of studies to include the IT touch all programmes require.

As at the present date, the MPE department has produced more that 400 graduates in the field of Mechanical/Manufacturing and Mechatronics Engineering. The current output is about 40 graduates per year.

The undergraduate programmes currently on offer include B. Engg in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering, BSc Production and Operations Management. Postgraduate programmes include an MSc in Quality Management, MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management and the MSc in Project Management offered in collaboration with the Civil Engineering Department. The Department also provides the required support to students embarking on MPhil and PhD programmes by research. Forthcoming programme of studies from the MPE Department include undergraduate courses in Computer Aided Engineering.

The MPE Department presently occupies the largest space in the Faculty of Engineering with eight specialised laboratories namely, the Thermodynamics, Fluid Power and Drives, Structural Mechanics and Dynamics, Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM), Mechanical Workshop, Metrology, and Metallurgy labs. A number of facilities in the labs are currently being used for conducting consultancy projects aimed at solving problems faced by industry.
