The laboratory is the oldest laboratory of the department and exists since the early 1970’s. Since then it has been used by hundreds of students both at diploma and degree levels for courses in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
Practical classes are run in the lab. for level 1 students taking the Electrical Engineering module (ELEC1101). Students perform a wide range of experiments including :
(i) verification of network theorems
(ii) resonance in ac circuits
(iii) bridge circuits
(iv) power measurement
(v) power and power factor
Level 2 students taking the Electrical Machine module ( ELEC 2108) use the lab mainly to perform experiments on electrical machines which include the:
(i) D.C motor – determination of efficiency under various loading conditions
(ii) DC generator- determination of open circuit and load characteristics
(iii) Three phase induction motor – the circle diagram
(iv) Single phase induction motor - study of windings operation and performance
(v) Three phase transformer - testing and parallel operation
(vi) Single phase transformer - determination of parameters, voltage regulation and efficiency.
Students work in the lab in groups of two or three and have practical sessions every fortnight. They are closely supervised and are required to take much care and precaution as some experiments involve rotating machinery operating from mains voltage (230/415V).
