General Information
The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH) formerly known as the Faculty of Social Studies and Humanities came into being as a full-fledged Faculty on the 01 September 1992 following restructuration of the School of Law, Management and Social Studies, under the Deanship of Late Associate Professor H Mathur.
The Faculty offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the umbrella field of Social Sciences and Humanities namely language studies (English, French, Creole), literature, cultural studies, history, anthropology, heritage studies, international relations, sociology, gender studies, social work, psychology, social development, developmental studies, political science, human rights, international relations, economics, econometrics, statistics, public policy, musicology, philosophy, religious studies amongst others. In line with demands of work sector, our programmes now include work placement and field visits. In its endeavour to respond to emerging needs, many programmes are being offered on a part-time basis, to increase access to education. Recognising the need for lifelong learning, the Faculty caters for mature students and also offers stand-alone modules. In addition to the taught undergraduate and postgraduateprogrammes, the Faculty also offers MSc/MA by Research, MPhil and PhD degrees.
The Faculty also runs several programmes in collaboration with the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) encompassing Oriental Languages, Performing Arts, Indian Philosophy, Mauritian Studies, Fine Arts, Media/Digital Arts, Advertising and Visual Communications as well as Film Production.
Over the past few years, the Faculty has aimed to increase its research output. Many academic staffs have completed their PhD while some are pursuing further studies. Publications by academic staff have appeared in national, regional and international journals. Main research themes include Public Sector Economics and Public Policies, Ethics, Language Studies and Literature, Social Sciences, Identity, Acculturation, Slavery and Indenture. Academics of the Faculty have also regularly provided expertise in applied research and consultancies, for both the public and private sector.
