Online International Youth Debate Challenge
UoM students, Mr Nawfar MUHAMAD SAWAR and Miss Shaistah Liyah IMAMBACCUS participated in the AfCFTA Youth in Trade Debate Challenge held online, from July 01st to 27th, 2024. The AfCFTA Youth Debate Challenge is a dynamic platform that presents young Africans with the opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue on intra-African trade issues and gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of the AfCFTA. The initiative aims to empower young people to become active participants in shaping the future of trade in Africa, and to foster a culture of openness, inclusivity, and collaboration among African youth.
After a great debate challenge during the Zonal Quarter final with the University of Lusaka, Zambia, the University of Mauritius team has qualified for the zonal semi-final round.
Reflecting on their journey with AfCFTA, they got the chance to draft real-world policies on Green Trade, Industrialisation, and Women's Role in Informal Economy, tackling challenges that pushed them to think like actual economists. Making it all the way to the semi-final round, especially at an international level, was no small feat—it was challenging but incredibly rewarding. The students played various roles while debating such as Policy Speaker, Limitations Speaker, Whip Speaker, and Cross-Examiners.
Their Coach, Assoc. Prof Dr. Taruna Ramessur, is an exceptional coach who has been a driving force behind their achievement. Her commitment to the team is incredibly inspiring, as she goes above and beyond to make sure they are well-prepared and confident in their arguments.
