UoM and the Sustainable Development Goals

The University of Mauritius (UoM) is committed to the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As the country’s oldest national university, UoM recognises its responsibility to lead by example and to place its knowledge, expertise and resources at the service of society.

Our ambition is to contribute meaningfully to a fairer, healthier and more sustainable Mauritius, and to the wider community of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). These states face distinct challenges such as climate vulnerability, pressure on marine and land resources, and limited economies of scale. We pursue this ambition through interconnected areas of activity namely the education we provide to our students, the research and innovation we undertake and our engagement with government, industry and local communities.

This page brings together, under each of the 17 SDGs, the University’s policies, initiatives, partnerships and measurable outcomes. It serves as a transparent record of our progress and is reviewed and updated annually, in line with UoM’s participation in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings. We welcome contributions from staff, students and partners whose work supports the Goals.

Explore our work by Goal

In the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, the University of Mauritius submitted evidence for the 5? Sustainable Development Goals. We chose these Goals because they reflect areas where the University’s teaching, research, outreach and campus operations make a strong and measurable contribution. The submission brought together policies, data and case studies from across our faculties, centres and administrative units.

Beyond our THE Sustainability submission

Our commitment to sustainable development extends well beyond the Goals included in our THE submission. Across the University, staff and students are contributing to all 17 SDGs, from [example, e.g. marine and coastal research supporting SDG 14] to [example, e.g. renewable energy projects supporting SDG 7] and [example, e.g. community programmes addressing SDG 1 and SDG 10]. These pages document that wider body of work.
